Haiyu Mike Chawan Rice Bowl
Mike” Rice Bowl – Layered Ash Glazes | Tsubaki Kiln (Seto, Japan)
The name “Mike” was inspired by the calico cat, known for its distinctive tri-color pattern. This concept came from the way three different ash glazes are layered on the bowl, resembling the unique markings of a calico cat.
Crafted with a natural ash glaze, this rice bowl features a simple yet inviting finish that enhances the beauty of everyday meals. Its gently rounded form fits comfortably in the hands, while the clean, modern design highlights the warmth and texture of traditional materials. Three types of ash glazes are luxuriously layered—wood ash (brown), pine ash (green), and rice straw ash (white)—creating subtle depth and a unique, organic expression.
Perfect for serving rice or small dishes, this versatile bowl brings elegance and harmony to both daily dining and special occasions.
About Tsubaki Kiln
Founded in 1979 by Haruji Hayashi in Jokoji, Seto, Tsubaki Kiln is known for its refined Seto sometsuke (blue-and-white porcelain), crafted using advanced copperplate transfer techniques. In 2012, second-generation potter Eiji Hayashi took over the kiln, blending his background in sculpture and Kyoto-trained skills to bring a fresh perspective. While preserving tradition, he continues to explore new forms of Seto ware with a modern sensibility.
