Japanese Shino White Small Matcha Tea Bowl Crab Motif – Mino Ware by Renji Nakagaki
This handmade small tea bowl with a lively crab motif is crafted by Renji Nakagaki, a ceramic artist working in the Mino ware tradition in Toki City, Gifu Prefecture. His studio is based in Dachi, a historic pottery village long known for its ceramic heritage.
Nakagaki is known for bringing classical techniques—such as Shino and Oribe glazes—into contemporary tableware with refined aesthetics and excellent craftsmanship. He regularly exhibits his work across Japan and is highly regarded by collectors.
This piece is inspired by Kitaoji Rosanjin, one of Japan’s most influential ceramic artists. The bold crab design, painted with traditional iron pigment, stands out beautifully against the soft white Shino glaze, whose gentle, milky surface adds warmth and character to the bowl.
Shino ware originated in the late 16th century as a glaze for tea ceremony vessels and is valued for its white opaque surface and expressive brushwork. Together with Setoguro, it is recognized as an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan.
With its intimate size, this bowl is ideal for matcha, sencha, or small servings of desserts or sake. It offers a harmonious blend of Japanese tradition and modern usability, making it a meaningful piece for both daily use and collection.
