This handmade side plate, featuring a lively crab motif, is crafted by Renji Nakagaki, a respected ceramic artist representing the traditions of Mino ware in Toki City, Gifu Prefecture. His studio is located in Dachi, a historic pottery village nestled in the hills, where kilns have long dotted the landscape.
Nakagaki is widely known for his ability to bring classical techniques—like Oribe and Shino glazes—into contemporary tableware with refined aesthetics and exceptional craftsmanship. He regularly holds solo and group exhibitions across Japan and is highly regarded among collectors and ceramic enthusiasts.
This particular piece is an homage to Kitaoji Rosanjin, one of Japan’s most influential 20th-century ceramic artists. The bold yet elegant depiction of a crab—rendered in traditional iron pigment—stands out beautifully against the soft white Shino glaze, creating a piece full of rustic charm and character.
