Japanese Handmade “Mike” Oval Plate – Calico-Inspired Ash Glazes – Seto Ware, Tsubaki Kiln

This handcrafted oval plate is designed for serving appetizers, small desserts, sweets, or delicate side dishes. Its gentle oval shape and calm, natural tones frame food beautifully, adding a sense of quiet refinement to both casual dining and more elegant table settings.

Crafted at Tsubaki Kiln in Jokoji, Seto City—one of Japan’s most historic pottery regions—this piece reflects the long tradition of Seto ware, produced continuously for over 1,000 years. Founded in 1979 by master potter Haruji Hayashi, Tsubaki Kiln is known for its refined Seto sometsuke (blue-and-white porcelain). Since 2012, the kiln has been led by second-generation potter Eiji Hayashi, whose background in sculpture and formal training in Kyoto bring a contemporary sensibility to the studio. While respecting traditional techniques, he continues to explore new expressions of Seto ceramics.

The plate is named “Mike,” inspired by the Japanese word for a calico cat, beloved for its distinctive tri-color coat. This idea is expressed through the subtle layering of three natural ash glazes:

Wood ash creating warm brown tones
Pine ash producing soft green hues
Rice straw ash adding gentle white accents

Rather than being painted, the calico-like pattern emerges naturally through the interaction of these glazes, resulting in depth, variation, and a unique surface on every piece.

The softly contoured oval form enhances presentation while remaining practical for everyday use. A gently raised rim helps hold sauces or delicate desserts, while the smooth surface and stable base highlight the warmth and texture of the ash glazes.
