Kiseto Yellow Matcha Chawan Tea Bowl

This handcrafted Matcha tea bowl is designed for preparing and enjoying traditional Japanese tea, offering both visual warmth and a comfortable feel in the hands.

Crafted at the distinguished Rokubei Kiln in Seto City, Aichi Prefecture, this piece represents Seto Akazu ware (Akazuyaki)—a lineage officially designated as a National Traditional Craft of Japan. Akazu ware is celebrated for preserving classical techniques that have been passed down for centuries, emphasizing natural materials, hand-thrown forms, and refined glazes.

The bowl is finished with a Kiseto glaze, characterized by its warm yellowish-brown tone created through subtle iron content in the glaze. Neither too bright nor muted, Kiseto carries a gentle radiance and quiet depth that has long been admired in Japanese tea ceramics. Fine Kannyu (crackle glaze) patterns spread naturally across the surface during cooling after firing. These cracks are decorative rather than structural, and over time they gradually deepen through use, forming what Japanese artisans call “nurtured scenery”—a visual record of shared moments between the bowl and its owner.

The softly contoured body displays visible rokuro-me (wheel-thrown finger marks), intentionally left by the potter. These rhythmic ridges lend authenticity and warmth to the form while also improving grip, allowing the bowl to sit securely in the hands during use.

Rokubei Kiln is one of the most representative kilns of Akazu ware. Its Matcha bowls have been selected for use at the Japan Pavilion at Expo Milano and presented as official gifts to world leaders during the Ise-Shima G7 Summit, reflecting the kiln’s standing within Japan’s ceramic tradition.
