Koseto Iron Glaze Floral Small Bowl

This handcrafted rinka small bowl is created by Masanori Hatano, a distinguished ceramic artist based in Seto City, Aichi Prefecture—one of Japan’s most historic pottery regions with over 1,000 years of ceramic tradition.

Hatano works within the Akazu Ware tradition, which originates in the Akazu area of Seto and is designated as a National Traditional Craft of Japan. Akazu ware is known for its refined forms, rich glazes, and techniques passed down through generations.

This piece features a traditional Koseto glaze, one of the oldest glaze styles in Seto ware, dating back to the Kamakura and Muromachi periods (13th–15th century). Koseto is an iron-rich glaze that produces warm, earthy tones ranging from amber and ochre to deep brown and black. Subtle variations in color and texture appear naturally through firing, giving each bowl a unique character.

The bowl is shaped in a gentle rinka (floral petal) form, adding a soft decorative accent while remaining highly functional. Its small size makes it ideal for serving appetizers, side dishes, desserts, or condiments, and it pairs beautifully with both Japanese and Western cuisine.
