This Guinomi (sake cup) is crafted by renowned Seto ware potter Takemitsu Iwatsuki, celebrated for his mastery of Kise-to glaze. Rooted in the traditions of Seto City, Aichi Prefecture, Iwatsuki has dedicated his career to reviving the timeless beauty of this historic style.
Kise-to, a representative glaze of Seto ware dating back to the late Muromachi and Momoyama periods (16th century), is known for its soft yellow to amber tones created by adding iron to ash glaze and firing in an oxidizing flame. Its warm, gentle hues made it a favorite for tea bowls and serving dishes in the world of tea ceremony.
In this guinomi, Iwatsuki brings that legacy into the present. By carefully sourcing local clays, preparing ash glazes, and refining his firing process, he creates a vessel with subtle green tints and a surface full of character. The cup’s refined form and inviting warmth make it not only ideal for enjoying fine sake, but also a piece of art that reflects the heritage of Japanese ceramics.
