Handcrafted Matcha Tea Bowl – Kiseto Glaze with Crackle Finish | Rokubei Kiln, Akazu Ware (Seto, Japan)

This handcrafted Matcha tea bowl is made at the distinguished Rokubei Kiln in Seto City, Aichi Prefecture—an area famed for its Setoyaki pottery tradition. Among Setoyaki, pieces produced in the Akazu region are known as Akazuyaki, a category recognized and certified as a National Traditional Craft of Japan due to its historical techniques and exceptional quality.
The bowl features a Kiseto glaze, a warm yellowish-brown tone achieved by the presence of small amounts of iron. Its subtly bright yet refined color evokes a quiet elegance unique to this style. The surface is further enhanced with natural Kannyu (crackle glaze) patterns—fine cracks that form during the cooling process after firing. These are purely decorative and not structural. Over time and use, these patterns evolve and deepen, creating what Japanese artisans call “nurtured scenery”, fostering a sense of personal connection with the piece.
The body of the bowl carries visible Rokuro-me (wheel-thrown finger marks), left intentionally by the potter’s hands as the clay was shaped. These gentle ridges not only offer visual charm and authenticity but also improve grip, preventing slippage when handling the bowl.

Rokubei Kiln is one of the most representative kilns of Akazuyaki, known for crafting Matcha bowls used at the Japan Pavilion during Expo Milano and presented as gifts to dignitaries at the Ise-Shima G7 Summit.

This Matcha bowl is a true embodiment of Japanese ceramic tradition—where form, glaze, and aging beauty come together to enrich your tea experience.
