Koseto Iron Glaze Square Plate
Square Small Plate – Koseto Glaze | Masanori Hatano | Akazu Ware (Seto, Japan)
This handcrafted square small plate is made by Masanori Hatano, a renowned ceramic artist based in Seto City, Aichi Prefecture—an area known for its centuries-old Setoyaki pottery tradition. Within this tradition, the Akazu region is especially celebrated for Akazu Ware, designated as a National Traditional Craft of Japan for its historical significance and superior craftsmanship.
The piece features a traditional Koseto glaze, one of the oldest glaze styles in Seto ware, dating back to the Kamakura and Muromachi periods (13th–15th century). Koseto, a type of iron-rich black glaze, produces a rich and earthy color palette—ranging from yellowish-brown to deep brown or black, depending on the iron content. This subtle variation creates a warm, timeless elegance that complements both Japanese and Western cuisine.
Designed in a refined square form with softly rounded edges, the plate combines simplicity with a modern sense of balance. Its compact size makes it perfect for serving appetizers, sashimi, small portions of grilled dishes, or desserts. The flat surface highlights the food’s presentation, allowing colors and textures to stand out beautifully.
Masanori Hatano is recognized as one of Seto’s leading ceramic artists. He specializes in creating works that fuse traditional Akazu glazes with modern design, offering pieces that are lightweight, functional, and well-suited for everyday use. His works have received numerous awards, including honors at the Nitten and Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition. In addition to holding solo exhibitions across Japan, he is also an active educator, mentoring the next generation of potters.
A beautiful balance of tradition and modern usability, this square small plate makes a thoughtful addition to your daily tableware—and a meaningful gift for those who appreciate fine Japanese ceramics.
