Shino Chawan Rice Bowl Crab
〈Inspired by Rosanjin〉Crab Motif Rice Bowl – Shino Glaze | Renji Nakagaki | Mino Ware (Toki, Gifu, Japan)
This handcrafted rice bowl, featuring a lively crab motif, is created by Renji Nakagaki, a respected ceramic artist representing the traditions of Mino ware in Toki City, Gifu Prefecture. His studio is located in Dachi, a historic pottery village nestled in the hills, where kilns have flourished for centuries.
Nakagaki is widely known for his ability to bring classical techniques—such as Oribe and Shino glazes—into contemporary tableware with refined aesthetics and exceptional craftsmanship. He regularly holds solo and group exhibitions across Japan and is highly regarded among collectors and ceramic enthusiasts.
This particular piece pays homage to Kitaoji Rosanjin, one of Japan’s most influential 20th-century ceramic artists. The bold yet elegant depiction of a crab—painted in traditional iron pigment—contrasts beautifully with the soft white Shino glaze, resulting in a vessel full of rustic charm and character. The feldspar-based Shino produces its characteristic milky opacity and warm tones, giving the bowl a serene and timeless appeal.
Shino ware originated in the late 16th century during the Azuchi-Momoyama period, primarily as a glaze for tea ceremony wares. It is characterized by its white, opaque glaze and expressive brushwork with iron oxide. Together with Setoguro (black Seto), Shino ware is recognized as an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan. Its quiet warmth and natural beauty continue to resonate with viewers even today.
With a comfortable size and form, this rice bowl is perfect for serving daily meals such as rice, donburi, or side dishes. Whether used at the table or displayed as part of a collection, it embodies a thoughtful blend of Japanese tradition and modern practicality—and makes a meaningful gift for those who appreciate fine handmade ceramics.
