Seto Akazu Ware Sushi Yunomi – Kiseto Glaze

This handcrafted Sushi Yunomi (tea cup) is made of Seto Akazuyaki (瀬戸赤津焼), a traditional style of Seto ware produced in Seto City, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. Each piece is hand-formed at the historic Rokubei Kiln (六兵衛窯).
Among Setoyaki, works created in the Akazu area are called Akazuyaki, recognized for their superior quality and certified as a national traditional craft. The Rokubei kiln is one of its most representative kilns, known for producing matcha tea bowls presented at Expo Milano and commemorative pieces for the Ise-Shima Summit.
The cup features the traditional Rokuro-me—finger marks left as the clay is pulled up on the wheel—which not only add a simple beauty to the form but also provide a slip-resistant texture. In addition, a small indentation called Ekubo is intentionally created, making the cup easier to hold.
Finished with a classic Kiseto glaze, the surface reveals a warm yellowish-brown tone with subtle elegance, enhanced by natural iron in the clay. Fine Kannyu (crackle glaze) spreads across the surface, creating unique patterns that change over time. As the cup is used, these fine crackles deepen in character, allowing you to enjoy the evolving beauty of the piece—an aesthetic of “nurturing the scenery” cherished in Japanese ceramics.
