Yashichida Oribe Tea Cup

This handcrafted cup is a refined example of Seto Akazu ware (瀬戸赤津焼), created at the esteemed Rokubei Kiln in Seto City, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. Shaped by hand on a potter's wheel using traditional Setoyaki (瀬戸焼) earthenware, it reflects the rich ceramic heritage of Seto ware, which dates back over 1,000 years.

The cup is worked in the Yashichida Oribe style (弥七田織部), a refined branch of Oribe ware that first appeared at the Yashichida kiln in the Mino region during the Momoyama period. Distinct from the bolder, heavier Oribe styles, Yashichida Oribe is prized for its delicate, airy brushwork and the quietly enigmatic beauty of green copper glaze trailed across the surface.

A warm off-white crackle glaze (kannyū) veins the entire body like fine lacework, while a trailing ivy motif is hand-painted in soft iron-brown (tetsu-e). Ribbons of Oribe green glaze fall gently down the sides, giving the piece a natural sense of movement and depth. Because every cup is individually thrown and hand-painted, the crackle pattern, brushwork, and green glaze vary slightly from piece to piece — no two are ever quite alike.

With its comfortable form and pleasant weight in the hand, this cup is well suited to green tea, but is equally at home with sake, water, or a quiet evening drink. Subtle rokuro-me (finger marks left by the potter's wheel) enhance the grip and lend a natural, tactile feel.

Seto Akazu ware is recognized as a Certified Traditional Japanese Craft, and Rokubei Kiln is among its most respected studios, known for producing works for the Japan Pavilion at Expo Milano and the Ise-Shima G7 Summit.
