Handcrafted from Setoyaki porcelain at Shingama Kiln (眞窯) in Seto City, Aichi Prefecture, this elegant small plate features a delicate leaf-vein motif inspired by the natural beauty of foliage. The softly flowing lines of the veins are meticulously hand-painted in vivid indigo, expressing a quiet harmony between nature and traditional craftsmanship.

Founded in 1919, Shingama Kiln has long specialized in sometsuke ceramics, creating works decorated with gosu (a cobalt-based pigment) and iron oxide. Their artisans continue to uphold this legacy today, blending generations of tradition with refined artistry in every piece.

Sometsuke is a classic technique in which patterns are hand-drawn with gosu on a white porcelain body, then coated with a clear glaze and fired at high temperature. The resulting indigo tones vary subtly depending on the clay, glaze, and firing conditions, giving each piece its own character.
A hallmark of this style is the dami technique, where gosu is applied with a generously loaded brush to create soft gradations of blue—evoking the expressive quality of ink painting. Achieving such depth and nuance requires years of experience and practiced skill.

In 1997, Seto Sometsuke-yaki was officially designated a Traditional Craft of Japan by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, recognized for its refined brushwork and enduring aesthetic.

With its gentle form and graceful leaf-vein pattern—symbolizing life, growth, and the quiet rhythms of nature—this small plate adds a subtle elegance to any table. Ideal for serving sweets, appetizers, or condiments, it also makes a thoughtful gift for those who appreciate fine Japanese ceramics and understated design.
